Dr Maleka has always been passionate about ophthalmology. He began his ophthalmology career in 1998 at Groothoek Hospital as an Intern, where he used to voluntarily help a visiting specialist, Dr Cope Khai (may his soul RIP), with the eye clinic when he was visiting every other week.
In 2000, he joined the Eye Department of Pietersburg-Mankweng Hospital, as a medical officer. This is where he perfected his operating skills by doing more than a thousand cataract and other cases in a period of 2 years.
Dr Maleka then moved to the biggest Eye Department in South Africa, WITS University department of ophthalmology. That’s where he obtained his Diploma in Ophthalmology (2002) and Fellowship in ophthalmology (2006) from the South African College of Medicine, registered with the Health professions Council of South Africa.
He stayed on as a teaching consultant for 10 years with WITS Ophthalmology Department till December 2016. In that time he perfected his Posterior segment training with the legendary Dr Clive Martin. Dr Maleka has been repairing retinas, diabetic retinas and a whole host of retinal conditions from then to date.
He also had a keen interest in Corneal pathology and Refractive Laser Eye Surgeries. In 2008 and 2009 he spent time in some of the leading European Eye clinics of the world, in London and Dublin, learning refractive laser surgery. He came back to South Africa to setup the first laser unit in the public service through Folateng at the Johannesburg Academic Hospital. That’s where he performed his first Corneal Collagen Cross Linking in 2009 on a keratoconus patient, going to perform man.
Almost simultaneously in 2010, he setup a state of the art Laser centre in Waverley Sandton Johannesburg at the Centre of Advanced Medicine. Thousands of refractive surgery and keratoconus eyes have been treated to date. He even started fitting Scleral Lenses for complex keratoconus patients with great results. Because of Dr Maleka’s refractive surgery expertise, cataract surgery is considered a refractive procedure by Dr Maleka. offering premium lenses that can correct astigmatism and reading problem following your cataract surgery.
He has now started offering his services in Morningside Johannesburg. The new Eye Centre boasts a New laser suit, two theatres and a procedure room.
Dr Maleka regularly attends international meetings and congresses. He has presented at numerous meeting largely on refractive surgery and cross -linking. Dr Maleka has empathy as he himself has undergone laser refractive surgery in 2009.
Dr Maleka is not only a specialist in Laser Eye surgery, in his spare time he loves travelling, road running and playing golf.
